The Council of Europe will help Silvia Baraldini
Article from the Corriere della Sera of 10th June 1998
Strasbourg - The Council of Europe will intervene with the US Ambassador in
France to plead for the cause of Silvia Baraldini. Christian Kruger,
deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe said he will write to the
US ambassador in Paris to make him aware of the problem. Yesterday Kruger
received a delegation of Italian deputies who promote the cause of the
Italian detainee since years.
The direct negotiations between Italy and the United States started
yesterday in Strasbourg. Besides Italy and the US, six other countries,
members of the Council of Europe take part of the working group: France,
Great Britain, Germany, Belgium, Sweden and Turkey.
In the "Baraldini group" Italy is represented by magistrates Giuseppe Di
Gennaro and Giorgio Lattanzi. The "committee" was appointed on Monday by
the European Committee on Penal Affaires (CEAP) that will examine today
behind closed doors the dispute on the Baraldini case between the two
countries; Minister of Justice Gian Maria Flick presented before the
Council of Europe an appeal against Washington for the non-application of
the Strasbourg convention on the extradition of foreign detainees to their
fatherland to undergo the term of punishment in their own country.
Tomorrow, the CEAP could also decide to nominate on Thursday two
personalities in charge of leading, if necessary, a mediation between Italy
and the United States.
