Academicos do Salgueiro is the Grand Champion of the 2009 Parade and a true elite samba school. Its Carnival parades were one of the first to showcase the achievements of the Afro-Brazilians and what really made this school click at Sambadrome, was its outstanding samba dance performers. It has a very popular samba hall, close to the city centre. It is famed since 50 years of existence for presenting some of the most marvelous and sensational "ultra-muses" of the Brazilian Carnival.
History
This samba school had its origin in the Salgueiro slum when everyone came down to parade at slum’s Saens Peña public square and the school as we know it was born from the fusion of two other samba schools. Joaquim Casemiro known as Calça Larga was one of its main people. Its music scene was made richer by men who contributed with original composition for the slum’s samba schools and it was through their songs that Salgueiro became a respected school.
Identity
Salgueiro uses its symbol, the fire in all its parades year after year and its red and white marque colors are associated with Rio de Janeiro’s patron saint, St. Sebastian, and an African-Brazilian deity named Xangô.
Performance
During the 50’s Salgueiro performed well and won over the public, establishing itself in the big league. However, it became a champion for the first time in 1960 with the subsequent decade being a milestone in its history where the school won three titles, presented memorable themes and contributed definitively for changes on samba school parades. The brilliance continued through the 70’s which witnessed a new chapter in affluence and creativity in the Carnival’s samba parades. The 80's were a tough period for the school but it bounced back to claim victory in 1993. The 21st century saw Salgueiro’s marvelous parades which have left the crowds enchanted.
